Venturing into Gulmarg's extensive backcountry without a competent and experienced guide can quickly become a challenging and potentially disastrous experience. This is particularly true for visitors with limited time to explore the area and minimal knowledge of avalanche risk assessment and safe route-finding in complex alpine ski terrain.
There are several compelling reasons why we strongly recommend skiing or riding in Gulmarg with an experienced guide.
FThe first reason is the unique geographical location of the ski area, situated close to the Line of Control, which marks the border between the Indian and Pakistani parts of Kashmir. This location imposes restrictions on unrestricted terrain access.
The second crucial factor is the significant risk of avalanches in Gulmarg. Mountain guides and avalanche experts classify the ski terrain on Mt. Apharwat, at an elevation of 4,200 meters (13,000 feet), as complex. This designation signifies exposure to multiple overlapping avalanche paths, an abundance of steep slopes (30°+), open terrain with numerous avalanche starting zones, and terrain traps below, along with limited options to reduce exposure. Finally, in the event of an avalanche burial or accident in the backcountry, immediate search and rescue, as well as first aid, must come from your group within 15 minutes. It may take hours for the Ski Patrol to reach remote areas. When Heliski operations are in progress, they may be contacted in case of accidents and evacuation requirements. Additionally, communication options are limited, and guests must rely on their own first aid skills to manage accidents.

Our guides have been meticulously selected from the small pool of only 18 officially registered snow guides in Gulmarg. They have received local training and completed a specialized "guide training" program based on freeride guide specifications. Furthermore, our guides have either completed or are in the process of completing the necessary courses to be accredited as qualified guides.
It's important to recognize that the avalanche terrain in Gulmarg is not akin to a theme park. Hiring a proficient guide or skiing with an experienced partner outside controlled areas is crucial. Venturing out alone into the backcountry is never advisable. Your safety and well-being are paramount.
